twentyone
So, I have been twentyone for a few days now... Didn't really have the time to reflect on what it means to be twenty-one until now...

Its strange because people see twenty-one as the age where you become an adult. The age where you leave your childhood behind and actually embrace adulthood properly. Sort of get the feeling that so much more is expected of you when you turn twenty-one. Things that you sign are actually legally binding. It's sort of like having your safety net of ignorance and childishness being pulled away from you. You can't claim that you didn't understand the consequence of signing something and actually more or less get away with it. And that was kind of why I didn't want to turn twenty-one. Because it comes with so many responsibilities and so much expectations.

I was actually telling my housemates after twenty-one, you don't really look forward to your birthday anymore. Because after twenty-one, every birthday just means you get a year older. There isn't anything really significant you look forward to anymore. I've always thought twenty-one signified the prime of your youth. And so, everything after that sort of suggests a decline of youth... is that very pessimistic? Hehhh...

But looking back, I guess I have had a pretty great childhood. I was just recalling all the fun things I did in primary school. Like shooting people with G2 pens, and playing baseball in class with the recorder as a bat and a plasticine ball as a ball. Playing Marco Polo on a moving school bus, climbing over chairs on a moving school bus, stuffing uneaten bread into the seats of the school bus. Fighting on the monkey bars with random people in the morning. Climbing up the hill, although it wasnt allowed, and running all the way down. Playing scissors, paper, stone on the balancing beam and trying to psychoanalyse people so that I made sure I won ( it worked!) Coming out with weird mystery/adventure stories that I played with my friend on the school bus. Playing big doll house with my sister and using the WHOLE room as our dollhouse town. Pretending to eat eraser dust in kindergarten just so that the boys would stop boasting. Disbelieving Bryan the dinosaur and his story about his pet peacock, (took me ten years to realise it actually was true! I still can't quite get over the fact that after ten years I realise that he was actually telling the truth!) And in secondary school, where choir dominated almost everything. Worrying, practicing for auditions. Crying/stressing over SYF. Crying over math. Making the best friends I have. And in JC and uni, seeing God work in ways that are so amazing. Making things that I never in a million years thought I would be doing actually come true. Seeing God's hand move in my life. And I think for the first time, understanding what it means to have God's peace. God has been very very faithful and very very good!

And so ya... I think I have had quite a wonderful childhood. And I guess it is time to move on. Time to see what adulthood entails... Or at least take baby steps into adult life, since I'm not really working yet... Time to embrace what is before me. It is sort of scary... but at the same time, sort of exciting. And with God with me, there isn't really anything to fear(:
